Tilt-to-length coupling in LISA Pathfinder: A data analysis
, Physical Review D, Vol: 108, ISSN: 2470-0010We present a study of the tilt-to-length coupling noise during the LISA Pathfinder mission and how it depended on the system's alignment. Tilt-to-length coupling noise is the unwanted coupling of angular and lateral spacecraft or test mass motion into the primary interferometric displacement readout. It was one of the major noise sources in the LISA Pathfinder mission and is likewise expected to be a primary noise source in LISA. We demonstrate here that a recently derived and published analytical model describes the dependency of the LISA Pathfinder tilt-to-length coupling noise on the alignment of the two freely falling test masses. This was verified with the data taken before and after the realignments performed in March (engineering days) and June 2016, and during a two-day experiment in February 2017 (long cross-talk experiment). The latter was performed with the explicit goal of testing the tilt-to-length coupling noise dependency on the test mass alignment. Using the analytical model, we show that all realignments performed during the mission were only partially successful and explain the reasons why. In addition to the analytical model, we computed another physical tilt-to-length coupling model via a minimizing routine making use of the long cross-talk experiment data. A similar approach could prove useful for the LISA mission.

Measurement of the tt¯ charge asymmetry in events with highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks in pp collisions at s=13 TeV
, Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics, Vol: 846, ISSN: 0370-2693The measurement of the charge asymmetry in top quark pair events with highly Lorentz-boosted top quarks decaying to a single lepton and jets is presented. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The selection is optimized for top quarks produced with large Lorentz boosts, resulting in nonisolated leptons and overlapping jets. The top quark charge asymmetry is measured for events with a tt¯ invariant mass larger than 750 GeV and corrected for detector and acceptance effects using a binned maximum likelihood fit. The measured top quark charge asymmetry of (0.42−0.69+0.64)% is in good agreement with the standard model prediction at next-to-next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamic perturbation theory with next-to-leading-order electroweak corrections. The result is also presented for two invariant mass ranges, 750–900 and >900GeV.

Search for the Higgs boson decay to a pair of electrons in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV
, Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics, Vol: 846, ISSN: 0370-2693A search is presented for the Higgs boson decay to a pair of electrons ([Formula presented]) in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV. The data set was collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb−1. The analysis uses event categories targeting Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion. The observed upper limit on the Higgs boson branching fraction to an electron pair is 3.0×10−4 (3.0×10−4 expected) at the 95% confidence level, which is the most stringent limit on this branching fraction to date.

Search for pair-produced vector-like leptons in final states with third-generation leptons and at least three b quark jets in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV
, Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics, Vol: 846, ISSN: 0370-2693The first search is presented for vector-like leptons (VLLs) in the context of the “4321 model”, an ultraviolet-complete model with the potential to explain existing B physics measurements that are in tension with standard model predictions. The analyzed data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 96.5fb−1, were recorded in 2017 and 2018 with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at s=13TeV. Final states with ≥3 b -tagged jets and two third-generation leptons (ττ, τντ, or ντντ) are considered. Upper limits are derived on the VLL production cross section in the VLL mass range 500–1050 GeV. The maximum likelihood fit prefers the presence of signal at the level of 2.8 standard deviations, for a representative VLL mass point of 600 GeV. As a consequence, the observed upper limits are approximately double the expected limits.

Search for Z′ bosons decaying to pairs of heavy Majorana neutrinos in proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV
, Journal of High Energy Physics, Vol: 2023A search for the production of pairs of heavy Majorana neutrinos (Nℓ) from the decays of Z′ bosons is performed using the CMS detector at the LHC. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV, with an integrated luminosity of 138 fb−1. The signature for the search is an excess in the invariant mass distribution of the final-state objects, two same-flavor leptons (e or μ) and at least two jets. No significant excess of events beyond the expected background is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the product of the Z′ production cross section and its branching fraction to a pair of Nℓ, as functions of Nℓ and Z′ boson masses (mNℓ and mZ′, respectively) for mZ′ from 0.4 to 4.6 TeV and mNℓ from 0.1 TeV to mZ′/2. In the theoretical framework of a left-right symmetric model, exclusion bounds in the mNℓ-mZ′ plane are presented in both the electron and muon channels. The observed upper limit on mZ′ reaches up to 4.42 TeV. These are the most restrictive limits to date on the mass of Nℓ as a function of the Z′ boson mass.

Performance of the local reconstruction algorithms for the CMS hadron calorimeter with Run 2 data
, Journal of Instrumentation, Vol: 11A description is presented of the algorithms used to reconstruct energy deposited in the CMS hadron calorimeter during Run 2 (2015-2018) of the LHC. During Run 2, the characteristic bunch-crossing spacing for proton-proton collisions was 25 ns, which resulted in overlapping signals from adjacent crossings. The energy corresponding to a particular bunch crossing of interest is estimated using the known pulse shapes of energy depositions in the calorimeter, which are measured as functions of both energy and time. A variety of algorithms were developed to mitigate the effects of adjacent bunch crossings on local energy reconstruction in the hadron calorimeter in Run 2, and their performance is compared.

First measurement of the forward rapidity gap distribution in Formula Presented collisions at Formula Presented
, Physical Review D, Vol: 108, ISSN: 2470-0010For the first time at LHC energies, the forward rapidity gap spectra from proton-lead collisions for both proton and lead dissociation processes are presented. The analysis is performed over 10.4 units of pseudorapidity at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of Formula Presented, almost 300 times higher than in previous measurements of diffractive production in proton-nucleus collisions. For lead dissociation processes, which correspond to the pomeron-lead event topology, the epos-lhc generator predictions are a factor of 2 below the data, but the model gives a reasonable description of the rapidity gap spectrum shape. For the pomeron-proton topology, the epos-lhc, qgsjet ii, and hijing predictions are all at least a factor of 5 lower than the data. The latter effect might be explained by a significant contribution of ultraperipheral photoproduction events mimicking the signature of diffractive processes. These data may be of significant help in understanding the high energy limit of quantum chromodynamics and for modeling cosmic ray air showers.

Measurements of the νμ and ν ¯ μ -induced coherent charged pion production cross sections on C 12 by the T2K experiment
, Physical Review D, Vol: 108, ISSN: 2470-0010We report an updated measurement of the νμ-induced, and the first measurement of the ν¯μ-induced coherent charged pion production cross section on C12 nuclei in the Tokai-to-Kamioka experiment. This is measured in a restricted region of the final-state phase space for which pμ,π>0.2 GeV, cos(θμ)>0.8 and cos(θπ)>0.6, and at a mean (anti)neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV using the T2K near detector. The measured νμ charged current coherent pion production flux-averaged cross section on C12 is (2.98±0.37(stat)±0.31(syst)-0.00+0.49(Q2 model))×10-40 cm2. The new measurement of the ν¯μ-induced cross section on C12 is (3.05±0.71(stat)±0.39(syst)-0.00+0.74(Q2 model))×10-40 cm2. The results are compatible with both the NEUT 5.4.0 Berger-Sehgal (2009) and GENIE 2.8.0 Rein-Sehgal (2007) model predictions.

Precision Measurement of CP Violation in the Penguin-Mediated Decay B_{s}^{0}→ϕϕ.
, Phys Rev Lett, Vol: 131A flavor-tagged time-dependent angular analysis of the decay B_{s}^{0}→ϕϕ is performed using pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at the center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb^{-1}. The CP-violating phase and direct CP-violation parameter are measured to be ϕ_{s}^{ss[over ¯]s}=-0.042±0.075±0.009 rad and |λ|=1.004±0.030±0.009, respectively, assuming the same values for all polarization states of the ϕϕ system. In these results, the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These parameters are also determined separately for each polarization state, showing no evidence for polarization dependence. The results are combined with previous LHCb measurements using pp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, yielding ϕ_{s}^{ss[over ¯]s}=-0.074±0.069 rad and |λ|=1.009±0.030. This is the most precise study of time-dependent CP violation in a penguin-dominated B meson decay. The results are consistent with CP symmetry and with the standard model predictions.

Observation of New Baryons in the Ξ_{b}^{-}π^{+}π^{-} and Ξ_{b}^{0}π^{+}π^{-} Systems.
, Phys Rev Lett, Vol: 131The first observation and study of two new baryonic structures in the final state Ξ_{b}^{0}π^{+}π^{-} and the confirmation of the Ξ_{b}(6100)^{-} state in the Ξ_{b}^{-}π^{+}π^{-} decay mode are reported using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. In addition, the properties of the known Ξ_{b}^{*0}, Ξ_{b}^{'-} and Ξ_{b}^{*-} resonances are measured with improved precision. The new decay mode of the Ξ_{b}^{0} baryon to the Ξ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+} π^{-} final state is observed and exploited for the first time in these measurements.

Observation of τ Lepton Pair Production in Ultraperipheral Pb-Pb Collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV.
, Phys Rev Lett, Vol: 131We present an observation of photon-photon production of τ lepton pairs in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions. The measurement is based on a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 404 μb^{-1} collected by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. The γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-} process is observed for τ^{+}τ^{-} events with a muon and three charged hadrons in the final state. The measured fiducial cross section is σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-})=4.8±0.6(stat)±0.5(syst) μb, where the second (third) term corresponds to the statistical (systematic) uncertainty in σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-}) in agreement with leading-order QED predictions. Using σ(γγ→τ^{+}τ^{-}), we estimate a model-dependent value of the anomalous magnetic moment of the τ lepton of a_{τ}=0.001_{-0.089}^{+0.055}.

Measurement of the Λ_{b}^{0}→Λ(1520)μ^{+}μ^{-} Differential Branching Fraction.
, Phys Rev Lett, Vol: 131The branching fraction of the rare decay Λ_{b}^{0}→Λ(1520)μ^{+}μ^{-} is measured for the first time, in the squared dimuon mass intervals q^{2}, excluding the J/ψ and ψ(2S) regions. The data sample analyzed was collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. The result in the highest q^{2} interval, q^{2}>15.0 GeV^{2}/c^{4}, where theoretical predictions have the smallest model dependence, agrees with the predictions.

Observation and branching fraction measurement of the decay Ξ<inf>b</inf><sup>−</sup> → Λ<sup>0</sup><inf>b</inf>π<sup>−</sup>
, Physical Review D, Vol: 108, ISSN: 2470-0010The decay Ξ−b → Λ0bπ− is observed using a proton-proton collision data sample collected at center-of-ffiffi mass energy ps ¼ 13 TeV with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb−1. This process is mediated by the s → uūd quark-level transition, where the b quark in the Ξ−b baryon is a spectator in the decay. Averaging the results obtained using the two Λ0b decay modes, Λ0b → Λþc π− and Λ0b → Λþc π−πþπ−, the relative production ratio is measured to be ðfΞ−b =fΛ0 bÞBðΞ−b → Λ0bπ−Þ ¼ ð7.3 ± 0.8 ± 0.6Þ × 10−4. Here the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and fΞ−b ðfΛ0 bÞ is the fragmentation fraction for a b quark into a Ξ−b (Λ0b) baryon. Using an independent measurement of fΞ− b =fΛ0 b, the branching fraction BðΞ−b → Λ0bπ−Þ ¼ ð0.89 ± 0.10 ± 0.07 ± 0.29Þ% is obtained, where the last uncertainty is due to the assumed SU(3) flavor symmetry in the determination of fΞ− b =fΛ0 b,.

Updated T2K measurements of muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance using 3.6×1021 protons on target
, Physical Review D, Vol: 108, ISSN: 2470-0010Muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance probabilities are identical in the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework, but CPT violation and nonstandard interactions can violate this symmetry. In this work we report the measurements of sin2θ23 and Δm322 independently for neutrinos and antineutrinos. The aforementioned symmetry violation would manifest as an inconsistency in the neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters. The analysis discussed here uses a total of 1.97×1021 and 1.63×1021 protons on target taken with a neutrino and antineutrino beam respectively, and benefits from improved flux and cross section models, new near-detector samples and more than double the data reducing the overall uncertainty of the result. No significant deviation is observed, consistent with the standard neutrino oscillation picture.

Search for the lepton-flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson and additional Higgs bosons in the Formula Presented final state in proton-proton collisions at Formula Presented
, Physical Review D, Vol: 108, ISSN: 2470-0010A search for the lepton-flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson and potential additional Higgs bosons with a mass in the range 110-160 GeV to an Formula Presented pair is presented. The search is performed with a proton-proton collision dataset at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of Formula Presented. No excess is observed for the Higgs boson. The observed (expected) upper limit on the Formula Presented branching fraction for it is determined to be Formula Presented at 95% confidence level, the most stringent limit set thus far from direct searches. The largest excess of events over the expected background in the full mass range of the search is observed at an Formula Presented invariant mass of approximately 146 GeV with a local (global) significance of 3.8 (2.8) standard deviations.

Measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt charmonia in PbPb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV
, Journal of High Energy Physics, Vol: 2023The second-order (v 2) and third-order (v 3) Fourier coefficients describing the azimuthal anisotropy of prompt and nonprompt (from b-hadron decays) J/ψ, as well as prompt ψ(2S) mesons are measured in lead-lead collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sNN = 5.02 TeV. The analysis uses a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.61 nb −1 recorded with the CMS detector. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay channel. The v 2 and v 3 coefficients are extracted using the scalar product method and studied as functions of meson transverse momentum and collision centrality. The measured v 2 values for prompt J/ψ mesons are found to be larger than those for nonprompt J/ψ mesons. The prompt J/ψ v 2 values at high p T are found to be underpredicted by a model incorporating only parton energy loss effects in a quark-gluon plasma medium. Prompt and nonprompt J/ψ meson v 3 and prompt ψ(2S) v 2 and v 3 values are also reported for the first time, providing new information about heavy quark interactions in the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions. Observation of New Ω_{c}^{0} States Decaying to the Ξ_{c}^{+}K^{-} Final State.
, Phys Rev Lett, Vol: 131Two new excited states, Ω_{c}(3185)^{0} and Ω_{c}(3327)^{0}, are observed in the Ξ_{c}^{+}K^{-} invariant-mass spectrum using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. Five previously observed excited Ω_{c}^{0} states are confirmed, namely Ω_{c}(3000)^{0}, Ω_{c}(3050)^{0}, Ω_{c}(3065)^{0}, Ω_{c}(3090)^{0}, and Ω_{c}(3119)^{0}. The masses and widths of these seven states are measured with the highest precision to date.

Evidence of a J/ψK_{S}^{0} Structure in B^{0}→J/ψϕK_{S}^{0} Decays.
, Phys Rev Lett, Vol: 131An amplitude analysis of B^{0}→J/ψϕK_{S}^{0} decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. Evidence with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations of a structure in the J/ψK_{S}^{0} system, named T_{ψs1}^{θ}(4000)^{0}, is seen, with its mass and width measured to be 3991_{-10}^{+12} _{-17}^{+9} MeV/c^{2} and 105_{-25}^{+29} _{-23}^{+17} MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The T_{ψs1}^{θ}(4000)^{0} state is likely to be the isospin partner of the T_{ψs1}^{θ}(4000)^{+} state, previously observed in the J/ψK^{+} system of the B^{+}→J/ψϕK^{+} decay. When isospin symmetry for the charged and neutral T_{ψs1}^{θ}(4000) states is assumed, the signal significance increases to 5.4 standard deviations.

Measurement of the Dependence of the Hadron Production Fraction Ratios f_{s}/f_{u} and f_{d}/f_{u} on B Meson Kinematic Variables in Proton-Proton Collisions at sqrt[s]=13 TeV.
, Phys Rev Lett, Vol: 131The dependence of the ratio between the B_{s}^{0} and B^{+} hadron production fractions, f_{s}/f_{u}, on the transverse momentum (p_{T}) and rapidity of the B mesons is studied using the decay channels B_{s}^{0}→J/ψϕ and B^{+}→J/ψK^{+}. The analysis uses a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 61.6 fb^{-1}. The f_{s}/f_{u} ratio is observed to depend on the B p_{T} and to be consistent with becoming asymptotically constant at large p_{T}. No rapidity dependence is observed. The ratio of the B^{0} to B^{+} meson production fractions, f_{d}/f_{u}, is also measured, for the first time in proton-proton collisions, using the B^{0}→J/ψK^{*0} decay channel. The result is found to be within 1 standard deviation of unity and independent of p_{T} and rapidity, as expected from isospin invariance.

Measurement of the Ratios of Branching Fractions R(D^{*}) and R(D^{0}).
, Phys Rev Lett, Vol: 131The ratios of branching fractions R(D^{*})≡B(B[over ¯]→D^{*}τ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{τ})/B(B[over ¯]→D^{*}μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}) and R(D^{0})≡B(B^{-}→D^{0}τ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{τ})/B(B^{-}→D^{0}μ^{-}ν[over ¯]_{μ}) are measured, assuming isospin symmetry, using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to 3.0 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The tau lepton is identified in the decay mode τ^{-}→μ^{-}ν_{τ}ν[over ¯]_{μ}. The measured values are R(D^{*})=0.281±0.018±0.024 and R(D^{0})=0.441±0.060±0.066, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The correlation between these measurements is ρ=-0.43. The results are consistent with the current average of these quantities and are at a combined 1.9 standard deviations from the predictions based on lepton flavor universality in the standard model.
