Appointment
Professor John Kilner, dean of the Royal School of Mines, has been appointed head of the department of materials with effect from 1 September 2000 for a period of five years in succession to Professor Malcolm McLean.

Subwarden vacancy
The closing date for applications for the position of subwarden at Bernard Sunley House is 17 January 2000. Applicants should be either postgraduate or senior undergraduate students at Imperial College. The house is situated in Evelyn Gardens and houses 105 undergraduates. The subwarden will be expected to assist the warden with the social life of the house, pastoral care and discipline. Demands are mainly during evenings and weekends. In return, the successful applicant will have a rent free room in the house. ICSM research portfolio
The ICSM Research Portfolio 1999, which provides an overview of the research strategy and activities within the School of Medicine, is now available on the web at www.med.ic.ac.uk/rescon/news/pfolio99.pdf (1.48MB). Paper copies can be obtained by emailing Brenda Salvage at b.salvage@ic.ac.uk.

Orchestral players
Imperial Collegium Musicum, a newly formed symphony/chamber orchestra will be conducted by Natalia Luis-Bassa, a Fellow at the Royal College of Music. String players of all sections, including double bass, are needed and vacancies for horns, oboes and a second trumpet may arise. Rehearsals take place 18.00 - 20.00 every Wednesday in room 308 Huxley Building. A concert, planned for 22 March, will include Haydn Op 104 Symphony (The London) and Fauré Pavane.
