Director of Humanities Programme
Dr Charmian Brinson currently Reader in Germanic Studies and Co-ordinator of Foreign Language Studies has been appointed as Director of the Humanities Programme with effect from 1 October 2001.

Professorial Appointments
Professor Michael G H Bell, currently Professor of Transport Operations and Director of the Transport Operations Research Group in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Newcastle, has been appointed to the Chair in Transport, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, with effect from 1 January 2002.

Dr Patrick H Maxwell, currently Reader in Nephrology and Honorary Consultant Physician in Renal Medicine at the University of Oxford, has been appointed to the Chair in Nephrology, the Division of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine, at the Hammersmith Campus with effect from 1 March 2002.

Dr Martyn R Partridge, currently Consultant Physician at Whipps Cross University Hospital, has been appointed to the Chair in Respiratory Medicine, the Division of the National Heart and Lung Institute in the Faculty of Medicine, with effect from 1 January 2002.

Dr Guang-Zhong Yang, currently Reader in Visual Information Processing in the Department of Computing, has been appointed to the Chair in Medical Image Computing, held jointly between the Department of Computing and the Division of Surgery, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care in the Faculty of Medicine, with effect from 1 September 2001.

Readership Appointments
Dr William D Dorland, previously Associate Research Scientist at the Institute for Plasma Research at the University of Maryland, has been appointed as Reader in Plasma Physics, the Department of Physics in the Faculty of Physical Sciences with effect from 1 September 2001.

Dr John C Whittaker, currently Reader in Applied Statistics at the University of Reading, has been appointed as Reader in Statistical Genetics, the Division of Primary Care and Population Health Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine at the St Mary’s campus, with effect from 1 October 2001.
