COLLEGE APPOINTMENTS

Deputy Rector
Professor Peter W Bearman FREng, has accepted the appointment of Deputy Rector with effect from 1 October 2001 in succession to Professor William A Wakeham FREng.  Professor Bearman retains his appointment of Pro Rector, Projects.

Pro Rector (International Relations)
Professor David J Ewins FREng, Professor of Vibration Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, has accepted the new appointment of Pro Rector (International Relations) with effect from 1 August 2001.

Heads of department
Professor John R Beddington FRS, Professor of Applied Population Biology and Director of the T.H. Huxley School for Environment, Earth Sciences and Engineering, has been appointed as Head of the Department of Environmental Science and Technology in the Faculty of Life Sciences from 1 August 2001 to 31 July 2006.

Professor Peter L Knight FRS, Professor of Quantum Optics in the Department of Physics, has been appointed Head of the Department of Physics in the Faculty of Physical Sciences with effect from 13 August 2001 to 31 July 2006 in succession to Professor John B Pendry FRS.

Professor Stephen R Bloom has been reappointed as Head of the Division of Investigative Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine from 1 August 2001 to 31 July 2004.

Professor John Caldwell has been reappointed as Head of the Division of Biomedical Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine from 1 August 2001 to 31 July 2003.

Professor Sean P F Hughes has been reappointed as Head of the Division of Surgery, Anaesthetics & Intensive Care in the Faculty of Medicine from 1 August 2001 to 31 July 2004.

Professor Christopher Kennard has been reappointed as Head of the Division of Neuroscience and Psychological Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine from 1 August 2001 to 31 July 2004.

Professor Mark Walport has been reappointed as Head of the Division of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine from 1 August 2001 to 31 July 2004.

PROFESSORIAL APPOINTMENTS

Professor Martin R Bridson, currently Professor of Topology at the University of Oxford, has been appointed to the Chair in Pure Mathematics, in the Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Physical Sciences with effect from 1 January 2002.

Dr Richard W Groves, currently Senior Lecturer in Dermatology, UCL Honorary Consultant Dermatologist, University College, London Hospitals Trust and Director, Centre for Dermatology at UCL has been appointed to the Chair in Dermatology, in the Division of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine based at the Chelsea and Westminster campus with effect from 1 January 2002.

Professor Alexi Kornyshev, currently tenured Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Dusseldorf and Head of Division at the Institute for Materials and Process Energy Systems of the Research Centre Juelich in Germany, has been appointed to the Chair in Chemical Physics in the Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Physical Sciences with effect from 1 August 2002.

Professor Paul Seidel, currently Professor of Mathematics at the School of Mathematics at the Institute of Advanced Study, Princeton, has been appointed to the Chair in Pure Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Physical Sciences with effect from 1 September 2002.

READERSHIP APPOINTMENT

Dr Christoph M Tang, currently MRC Clinician Scientist in the University Department of Paediatrics at the University of Oxford, John Radcliffe Hospital, has been appointed as Reader in Infectious Diseases in the Division of Investigative Science in the Faculty of Medicine with effect from 8 October 2001.

VISITING PROFESSOR

Professor William A Wakeham FREng, Vice-Chancellor of Southampton University and formerly Deputy Rector, Pro Rector (Research) and Pro Rector (Resources) at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, has been appointed as Visiting Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology in the Faculty of Engineering, from 1 October 2001 to 30 September 2006.

Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHoSTM)

Dr Andrew C Warwick, Senior Lecturer) has accepted appointment as Acting Head of CHoSTM for the period 1 October 2001 to 30 September 2002 whilst Professor David Edgerton takes sabbatical leave.
