Professor Peter Dornan
Professor Peter Dornan
Professor Peter Dornan has been awarded the 2002 Rutherford Medal of the Institute of Physics jointly with Professor David Plane of CERN and Dr Wilber Venus, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, for their major contributions to the development of the detectors of the Large Electron Positron Collider and their leadership of the international ALEPH, OPAL and Delphi experiments.

Professor Igor Aleksander has been invited to join the newly formed ‘Facing Out’ Steering Group of the Royal Academy of Engineering. The group, which consists of Fellows and members drawn from politics and the media, aims to advise the Academy on how best to become better integrated with all aspects of society.  This includes presenting engineering in the media and schools in a way that highlights the excitement of creative synthesis.

Professor Howard Morris has been appointed emeritus professor of biological chemistry in recognition of his services to the university and his subject. Professor Morris will continue to advise on and support the research of the department of biological sciences mass spectrometry group, in addition to his new role as Chairman and Chief Scientist to the M-Scan group of companies.

Professor David Ewins, pro rector, international relations, has won two overseas awards for his work in vibration engineering. The ‘Golden Accelerometer’, awarded annually by the Scandinavian Vibration Society; and the 2002 Frocht Award, made annually by the Society of Experimental Mechanics in the USA, recognise the experimental mechanics educator of the year.

Professor Arkady Tseytlin has been nominated for a Royal Society-Wolfson Research Merit Award.  Council of the Royal Society gives Research Merit Awards to individuals of proven outstanding ability to undertake independent, original research. The award is tenable for five years and will provide an enhancement to the holder’s salary.
