The Centre for Transport Engineering and Modelling (CTEM) is one of the leading multidisciplinary transport centres in the world. The faculty comprises academic staff with backgrounds in engineering, economics and mathematics, and around 60 research staff and doctoral students. It has consistently received the highest possible rating for research in all assessment exercises undertaken by the UK Government over the past two decades.

The Centre also includes several specialist research units and enjoys collaborative links with other groups in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, elsewhere in Imperial College, other academic institutions and industrial partners. For publications, please visit the professional webpages of the CTEM staff and researchers.

CTEM forms the focus for wider transport research interests at Imperial College London, with a network of over 30 affiliated scholars. Based in central London, CTEM has extensive collaborative links with the public and private sector including programmes of research with organisations including The Lloyd's Register Educational Trust, and Transport for London. CTEM actively collaborates with other universities and the international consulting industry.

Principal areas of research include:

  • Transport operations
  • Transport and the environment
  • Railway operations and management
  • Transport economics
  • Positioning, navigation and geomatics
  • Travel demand modelling
  • Air traffic management
  • Transport safety
  • Logistics
