We have a proud history of pioneering chemistry training and research with practical benefits to society which continues today. We are one of the largest departments in the UK and our activities cover the full range of fundamental theoretical and experimental chemistry, as well as research at chemistry’s interfaces with other disciplines such as materials, engineering, biology and medicine.

Our undergraduate courses combine a broad theory basis with a strong practical component. At the postgraduate level, we offer a range of multidisciplinary 1-year MRes courses in addition to a vibrant PhD programme. We are a diverse community of over 1000 staff and students from all over the world and we are proud to have held an Athena Swan Gold award since 2013 in recognition of our efforts to promote an inclusive working environment.

We are based on two of the College’s campuses: the early years of our undergraduate teaching are carried out in South Kensington, while our research groups (including undergraduate research projects) are located in the Molecular Sciences Research Hub, which opened in 2018 on the College’s new White City campus.
