Summary

Thomas Burden is currently the course manager for the MRes in Drug Discovery and Development (DDD) course, and the chemistry lab manager in the group of Professor Ed Tate at the Molecular Sciences Research Hub (White City campus). These roles include supervising the MRes students on their research projects, and related assessments, whilst managing the Tate research group working on small molecule synthesis and purifications.

Thomas completed his degree in Chemistry (MSc) at the University of Birmingham between 2015-2019. He fulfilled his MSc research project working in the group of the late Professor John S. Fossey on the synthesis and screening of N-heterocycles for applications in multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. During his time at Birmingham he collaborated on additional medicinal chemistry projects with Dr Philip Craven and Dr Luke Alderwick.

Thomas then moved to the University of York to complete his PhD in organometallic and synthetic organic chemistry, co-funded by York and Syngenta under the supervision of Professor Ian J.S Fairlamb and Professor Jason M. Lynam. During his research time focusing on the application of manganese(I) for synthetic transformations, he conducted research at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (STFC) and at Syngenta Jealotts Hill. From the ongoing research centred on the study of C-H activation using manganese(I) Thomas, alongside the team at York, Syngenta and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory were awarded the 2021 Organic Division Horizon Prize:
Perkin Prize in Physical Organic Chemistry.
