High performance modelling

The group has extensive experiences in multiscale modeling using molecular dynamics simulation, finite element modelling, machine learning, and developing numerical analysis codes. The group uses Matlab, Python for coding, and Abaqus, Material Studio, LAMMPS, OVITO for modelling. Most of these codes and numerical models are freely open to the community and can be downloaded from the Codes tab.

The group owns a high performance workstation (AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7980X64 Core CPU, 24GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 4090 - HDMI GPU), and have unlimited access to Imperial's HPC facilities. At the core of the HPC service is a large High-Performance Computing (HPC) facility for non-interactive, high-throughput and highly parallel compute- and data-intensive tasks. The HPC facility additional contains compute nodes with GPUs for GPU accelerated workloads including AI/Machine Learning. 

Material characterisation


The group is based at Imperial Centre for Infrastructure Materials, which has equipped with cutting-edge facilities for any kinds of material characterisations that you can imagine. The centre has incubated 4 startups on civil engineering materials (i.e. Seratech, Permia, Aeropowder, Recycleye) which will offer support when commercialisation is required to maximise the societal/economic impact. 

The UKCRIC Advanced Infrastructure Materials Laboratory is the centrepiece of the centre where researchers will develop a new generation of construction materials that are more durable and robust, able to withstand ever heavier loads, and more cost effective to manufacture and maintain. 

Large scale structural testing

The group has access to the structure laboratories in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering which provide state-of-the-art facilities that are amongst the most up-to-date and best equipped in Europe.:

  • Our Structural Engineering lab has recently re-opened after a £10 million refit, and is now one of the best in the world, able to undertake a wide range of experimental work.
  • The Geotechnics lab is equipped with sophisticated purpose-designed equipment for soil testing and analysis.
  • The Applied Hydrodynamics lab has wind-wave generators, flumes and tanks.
  • Our two Environmental Engineering labs can undertake high level pollution/chemical analysis.
  • Our recently-established Intelligent Infrastructure and Transport lab is fully equipped with monitoring, sensing and electronic prototyping equipment that can support lab- and field-based studies on transport operations and civil infrastructure.

Composite materials testing and fabrication

The group is affiliated with the Imperial's Composites Centre which was founded in October 1983. The centre is a cross departmental institution for research in composite materials, and has equipped with world leading facilities for composite development, characterisation, and manufacturing.
