The Pears Cumbria School of Medicine: A partnership between Imperial College London and University of Cumbria

The Pears Cumbria School of Medicine

The Pears Cumbria School of Medicine is a partnership between Imperial College London and the University of Cumbria, with generous support from the Pears Foundation.

The Pears Cumbria School of Medicine was formally launched in November 2023, following the April 2022 announcement of plans to create Cumbria’s first medical school.

The School is led by Professor Mary Morrell, as Head of The Pears Cumbria School of Medicine.

About the School and its curriculum

The Pears Cumbria School of Medicine is a collaborative and inclusive medical school developed through an innovative partnership between Imperial College London and University of Cumbria. It will train skilled clinicians focussed on the delivery of high-quality person-centred care.

The graduate-entry programme will open in 2025 at University of Cumbria’s campus in Carlisle. The cohort of 50 graduate-entry students will study a bespoke four-year curriculum designed to train doctors who will help to improve health outcomes in Cumbria and the North West.

The curriculum blends expertise from the highly-rated MBBS programme Imperial College London, with University of Cumbria’s longstanding reputation in training allied healthcare professionals. It has been created with regional NHS partners to truly reflect the future workforce, skills, health and social care needs of the region and beyond.

Students will gain early exposure to clinical practice alongside research-informed medical sciences teaching. Students will also complete a community-based project on a topic of interest to them, linked with prevention and healthcare delivery. Clinical skills training and multi-professional collaborative learning will occur across the four-year programme.
