The Departmental Juno Transparency and Opportunity Committee

The Committee aims to address the under representation of women and minorities in university physics, and to create a welcoming and inclusive environment in the Department. The Committee was established in 2007 to implement the Institute of Physics' Juno Code of practice, and is also guided by the Athena Swan Charter. The Department of Physics currently holds Juno Practitioner status and the Athena Silver Swan award. The Head of Department and the Heads of Group have endorsed an ongoing action plan to stay commited to advance and promote minorities in Physics.

DR MORGAN WASCKO (CHAIR)

Morgan Wascko, Professor Physics, is active in experimental neutrino physics.  He was International co-Spokesperson of the T2K Collaboration in Japan (2015–2019), which was jointly awarded the Breakthrough Prize for Fundamental Physics in 2016 for discovery of neutrino flavour oscillation.  His wife is a Professor of Physics and they have two young daughters.  

 

 

 

DR YASMIN ANDREW

Dr Andrew is the Physics Student Liaison Officer, co-ordinating students' pastoral and academic support.  She is involved in a number of undergraduate physics education research projects.  After completing her PhD in Imperial's Plasma Physics Group, she was a research physicist on the Joint European Torus (JET) and continues to work on JET, MAST-U and DIII-D tokamak experiments. She has two grown-up sons and has worked full-time throughout her career.  She is a Fellow of the IOP.

                             

DR DAVID CLEMENTS
Dr David Clements is a Reader in the Astrophysics Group. He was a UG and PhD student at Imperial College before postdoctoral work elsewhere in the UK and in Europe, including Oxford and Cardiff Universities and the European Southern Observatory HQ near Munich and the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale near Paris. While a PhD student he was student union Postgraduate Affairs Officer and a member of the student union Council. He is also a published science fiction writer.

PROF MICHELE DOUGHERTY

Professor Michele Dougherty is Head of Department and Professor of Space Physics. She is leading unmanned exploratory missions to Saturn and Jupiter and is Principal Investigator for J-MAG - a magnetometer for JUpiter ICy moons Explorer *JUICE) of the European Space Agencies due for launch 2022. She was awarded a CBE in the 2018 New Year's Honours list, is a Fellow of the Royal Society and was awarded the Royal Astronomical Society Gold Medal in 2017.

 

DR LIZ ELVIDGE
Dr Liz Elvidge is the Head of the Postdoc and Fellows Development Centre responsible for the support and development of Imperial's 2,400 researchers and fellows.  She is an Athena SWAN assessor and a meber of the cross-college Athena SWAN committee.  In 2017 she published a book: 'What every postdoc needs to know', World Scientific.  She has two step-children and two step-granchildren.  She is the sole carer for her husband, who took early retirement due to ill-health.

 

MRS MERY FAJARDO

Mery Fajardo is the Physics Adminissions and Disability Officer.  She manages the admissions process and also looks after the pastoral care of Undergraduate students with physical and mental difficulties.  Mery is a member of the MAP Panel.  She is a mother and has worked at Imperial since 2001.

PROFESSOR CARL PATERSON
Professor Carl Paterson is the Director of Undergraduate Studies and is Professor of Optical Physics in the Photonics Group. He has been at Imperial for 29 years having joined the Physics Department in 1990 as a PhD student.

 

DR STUART MANGLES
Dr Stuart Mangles is a Reader in the Plasma Physics group.  He joined the Juno committee after being one of the first members of the department to take advantage of shared parental leave after it's introduction in 2015. He has specific interests in parental leave, flexible working and was previously a member of the working group that formed the Faculty of Natural Sciences Fellows’ Forum.

DR MARY MATTHEWS
Mary Matthews is a Royal Society Research Fellow and a proleptic lecturer in Ultrafast Science in QOLS. Mary gave birth to her first child two weeks after submitting her PhD thesis.  She now has two sons, 8 and 10, and describes her career as "non-linear", having worked part-time at 80%, relocated to another country and taken a detour to be an adviser to the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology.  Mary is interested in strong field phenomena occurring on ultrafast timescales in condensed matter.  

                               
DR SUBHANJOY MOHANTY
Dr Subhanjoy Mohanty is a Reader in the Astrophysics group, working on the formation of stars and planets. He joined Imperial in 2008, after receiving his Bachelor's degree from Harvard and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and a stint as a NASA Spitzer postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard. He is a recipient of the Faculty of Natural Sciences Excellence in Teaching award, and has been a member of Imperial's undergraduate admissions committee for the last decade.

                                   

DR DANIEL MORTLOCK
Dr Mortlock is a senior lecturer with a joint position in Physics (Astrophysics) and Mathematics (Statistics).  He is also a guest professor in the Astronomy Department at Stockholm University. He joined ICL in 2005 and was the Physics Department’s postdoctoral committee Chair from 2009-2011. His work within the Juno Committee extends to his interests in equality, diversity and inclusion efforts, and in particular spreading best practice across departments and institutions, for which he received an ICL Faculty Research Staff Award.  

 

MRS SUSAN PARKER
Mrs Susan Parker is the Technical Staff representative, Electronics Technician, Unite Branch Chair (joint) and Equalities Officer. Susan has been at Imperial as a member of Physics since 2008, having been previously self‐employed for 25 years. Her first full­‐time employment was working for Chelsea Instruments, a company set up and run by people originally from Imperial Physics. 

PROFESSOR JULIET PICKERING
Professor Juliet Pickering, Professor in the Space & Atmospheric Physics Group, Departmental Champion for part-­time working, and Admissions Tutor, has been a member of the Physics Department for 28 years. Juliet joined the department as a PhD student, spent time abroad at Lund and Harvard Universities, continued as an RA, and held a Royal Society University Research Fellowship. She is a mother, and worked 75% time for 12 years. 

DR JONATHAN PRITCHARD

Dr Pritchard's academic journey began with an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences from Cambridge.  He then moved out west to study for a PhD in the Theoretical Astrophysics group at the California Institute of Technology.  From there he migrated east as a Hubble Fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. 

DR JESSICA WADE

Dr Jessica Wade is a postdoctoral research associate in EXSS and is the PDRA representative for the Women in Physics (WiP) student group.  She was previously a undergraduate student at Imperial and has worked with the IOP, RAEng and several schools on campaigns to recruit and retain women in physics. In 2017 she was the UK representative on a US State Department International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP)  focussing on women in science. She won the Imperial College London Julia Higgins Medal in 2017.

MR LUKE WHITE

Luke White, the Operations Manager, focusses on processes and procedures linked with HR, Research and Financial Services, and training and development of Departmental administration teams.

DR ISABEL RABEY
Dr Isabel Rabey is an Assistant Teaching Fellow in the department of physics. She was previously an undergraduate and PhD student at Imperial and, after working as a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics, returned to the department in 2021. She is an active member of the Women in Physics (WiP) group and has a specific interest in increasing representation in physics.

 

MS AILINE KIMONYO
Aline Kimonyo is a Project Manager within the Photonics group working on the MACH3CANCER Accelerator project.  She joined Imperial in October 2020 and is passionate about equality, diversity and inclusion, with a specific interest in intersectionality and the BAME Attainment Gap.

DR MICHAEL FOX
Dr Michael Fox is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Physics Education Research and is part of the Strengthening Learning Communities project. His research includes both quantitative and qualitative studies investigating where and why gaps in attainment occur for different demographic groups and evaluates the impact of interventions on those gaps. Additionally, he has an interest in investigating teaching and learning in undergraduate physics labs.

DR JESSIE DURK
Dr Jessie Durk is a Research Associate in Physics Education and works on the Strengthening Learning Communities project. At Imperial she researches attainment gaps using quantitative methods, collaborates on StudentShapers projects, and is vice president of the Women in Physics society. Her undergraduate, master’s and PhD were in theoretical physics. She has also held postdoctoral positions in education research at the University of Cambridge and King's College London.  

 

MISS AMY SMITH
Amy Smith is a PhD student in the Physics Education Research Group and is part of the Strengthening Learning Communities project. Her research is broadly investigating sense of belonging and identity within physics, with a specific interest in social norms and how they influence student behaviour and authenticity. She is the current President of the Women in Physics (WiP) Society, and is the Departmental Representative for PG students.
