a) Are any special skills required to be able to work as Research Fellow compared to being a postdoc?

Independence and leadership are important skills to have, as you will be piloting your own research path through the academic space.

b) What are the main characteristics that make a successful Research Fellowship applicant?

A big part of it is being able to formulate a novel and timely research proposal. It can be tempting to continue working on the same research you have before, but showing ambition and the confidence to follow it, along with a good grounding and reaching implications in the research field will go a long way.
